Top Comics of Year Three, Part 2
July 3, 2010 - Saturday
Here are the top five most popular comics from last year. You can see my look at numbers 10 through 6 here. How does this top ten compares with your own personal favorites? Click on the pictures below to see the full size comics.
5. Ho! Ho! Ho!: In all honesty, I was pretty surprised to see this comic in the top 10 because I didn't think it was particularly good. I guess it just goes to show that as a creator it can be difficult to predict what your audience is going to like.
4. Hot Debate: I'm always looking for new and interesting scenery ideas to add to the backgrounds of strips. Someday it would be fun to have a map of the Calamities of Nature world, which summarizes where all these locations are in relation to one another. Any takers?
3. Living in the Moment: A definite highlight of last year was being linked by one of my favorite blogs, Bad Astronomy. Since this blog usually deals with topics of science and skepticism, you might have thought that the readers from this blog would gravitate toward comics that deal with similar topics. Although that was somewhat true, in fact, this comic was the one that everyone seemed to be most enthusiastic about. It has since become one of the most popular comics when readers order prints, and it's also available as a bookmark.
2. Generational Protesting: Living in Berkeley, this dichotomy is pretty obvious between the students and the baby boomers (many of whom used to be idealistic students themselves many years back). This was therefore an easy comic to come up with.
1. Which Would You Deport?: This comic is unique in a very particular way, but even after all the hundreds of thousands of times it's been viewed, I haven't had one email or comment mentioning this fact. Can you guess what it is?... This is the only Calamities of Nature strip ever made that doesn't feature any of the main characters! It's somewhat ironic that for the top two comics on this list the main characters play little or no role. Hopefully this isn't a bad sign for the Calamities cast!
